Private Voice

ArtWorks Academy offers private voice lessons for students 10-18 years old. Lessons are ½ hour per week. Students will receive instruction on vocal production and placement, breathing techniques, diction, tone and ear training. Students will study vocal anatomy, including the respiratory muscles, the larynx and throat structures, and how they affect singing. Instruction will also be given in music theory and performance skills. Age appropriate music will be assigned to each student.

We are finalizing the voice schedule for the 2024-2025 season. If your child would like to take voice lessons, please email Mica Harkey and she will add them to the list of potential students. Priority will be given to students who are currently enrolled for the summer or took voice lessons during the previous school year. You can email Mica Harkey at mica@artworksacademy.com.

Ages: 10-18 year olds

Classes for the 2024-2025 Season begin August 26, 2024.

Studio Class

Private voice students come together at least four times a year to perform for each other in a studio class. During this time students receive positive and constructive feedback from faculty and other students.  Studio classes allow students to share a piece on which they are currently working.  Studio classes differ from recital, in that a recital is a performance of a polished song and a studio class includes songs that are a work in progress. Students gain from listening and learning to evaluate musical performances.

Voice Recital

Each year our voice students prepare for their annual voice recital. The recital is in mid-May. Recitals are important, because they allow students to work toward a goal, show off their hard work and build confidence. They gain valuable performance skills by performing in front of their friends and families.

Music Achievement Award Program

ArtWorks Academy music students can participate in the Music Achievement Award Program through Music Teachers National Association (MTNA).  The achievement program helps encourage students to continue their music study and to strive to achieve goals that will not only help them become better musicians, but also will enhance their love and appreciation of music.  In addition, this program encourages students to seek a well-rounded music education beyond the private lesson. The instructor sets goals that are both realistic and attainable for each individual student according to the student’s needs, ability and motivational level. If the student achieves the goals over a specified period of time, they will receive a Music Achievement Award.

“Being at ArtWorks has really brought out the music that I didn’t even know I had in me. I started doing a summer musical and was disappointed because I thought it was going to be a play with NO singing or dancing. But then the singing and dancing ended up being my favorite part and now singing is one of my favorite things to do whether it’s in the shower or on stage. I started taking voice lessons with Mica, and it has really been amazing. She’s taught me so many things that I didn’t know I could do with my voice…She is very invested in teaching me to be the best I can.” – Trinidad L.
