Group Piano:  4 years old and up

We are thrilled to now offer piano lessons, both privately and in a group setting.  Although private piano instruction is quite common, group instruction is a concept that is not as familiar to many people.  We firmly believe in the benefits of group instruction and look forward to seeing our students learn and grow.

Group piano lessons have a rich history, both in the United States and abroad.  The concept was introduced in Ireland in the early 1800s and finally made its way to America in 1860.  In the early 20^th century the popularity of group piano grew and many public schools began offering piano classes. 

Since 1930, piano teachers have incorporated group teaching into their instruction methods.  Group piano is now offered in hundreds of universities to both music majors and non-majors. 

We have chosen to offer group piano for several reasons:

1.  It is an excellent opportunity for students to discover and explore a new instrument.

2.  It gives students a chance to see if they enjoy playing the piano before committing to private lessons.

3.  It is more cost effective for parents.

4.  Group instruction gives students a basic knowledge base before transitioning into private lessons, which makes the time they spend with their private instructor more efficient. 

5.  Learning with peers can increase motivation. 

Group Piano 1 and 2: 4-7 year olds

   
This class introduces students to musical concepts and skills, such as pitches, rhythms and basic music symbols. In addition to time spent at the keyboard, each class time will include movement and music games.

Group Piano 3: 8-12 year olds

Group piano focuses on the fundamentals of proper piano technique through scales, exercises and songs. Classes include theory, ear training, sight reading, ensemble work, correct piano fingering, proper hand position, and rhythm drills.

Private Piano Lessons:  5 years old and up

Students who learn better with one on one instruction should opt to take private lessons. Students meet with their instructor for 30 minutes each week. Lessons focus on the fundamentals of proper piano technique through scales, exercises and songs. Time is spent on theory, ear training, sight reading, correct piano fingering and proper hand position.

There are many advantages to private instruction:

1. Private instruction allows the teacher to focus on the individual’s strengths and weaknesses. Each student learns differently and a good instructor will be able to guide each student based on his or her learning style.

  
2. Students are able to move at their own pace.

  
3. Students can focus on learning and avoid being distracted by other students.

Private Voice Lessons:  10-18 year olds

ArtWorks Academy offers private voice lessons for students 10-18 years old. Lessons are ½ hour per week. Students will receive instruction on vocal production and placement, breathing techniques, diction, tone and ear training. Students will study vocal anatomy, including the respiratory muscles, the larynx and throat structures, and how they affect singing. Instruction will also be given in music theory and performance skills. Age appropriate music will be assigned to each student.
